SF Artists Speak: An Interview with John Bartkowiak

This photo is from the 1997-98 gallery of John Bartkowiak available here.
John Bartkowiak is a self-trained artist who began painting in his late twenties, exhibiting his artwork in galleries and various other locations all throughout the Bay Area. His work varies greatly as he goes through different periods of exploration from Mexican Muralism to Cubism, growing with each new period that he undergoes. Throughout these changes, the one constant of his work has been his emphasis on color and color balance. Learn more about him from this interview.
What can you tell us about the basics of your artwork?
No matter what the image or subject, it’s always about color and color balance.
What projects are you working on now? What art goals do you have for yourself?
I’m currently working on a few semi-sculptural paintings. My only goals as a painter are to keep experimenting and growing.
What advice do you have for emerging artists?
Work and show as often as possible.
Do you have any current or upcoming shows?
Joseph Cozza Salon.
How much networking do you do with other local artists?
None – I’ve always been an outsider.
Do you have a favorite gallery in San Francisco?
I like the photography galleries at 49 Geary.
What do you think the average visitor to San Francisco should know about the art scene here?
That there is no art scene center in San Francisco. Open Studios is a good opportunity to see the work of local artists.
How does the city inspire or affect your artwork?
San Francisco is a great muse – as beautiful as it is, its soul will always be a shrouded, sad, foggy Richmond District day.
