Afternoon at SFMoMA

Afternoon at SFMoMA

Tuesday was the free admission day at SFMoMA (the first Tuesday of every month is no charge to get in there and see their exhibits). I’d been meaning to go check it out since I moved here but you know how it is, that first Tuesday comes around so fast every month and there’s always something else to do. So I hadn’t been there since moving here. In fact, I hadn’t been there since the very first time that I came to San Francisco back in 1998. At the time, I didn’t know anything about the city. I had a …read more

Europa

Europa

Europa is a band that I would have loved in high school. Now hold on, I’m not dissing the band at all (eek, dissing, I think I just went back to high school!) It’s just that, although I listen to a whole range of different music, my personal preferences have begun to lean towards softer, more lyrical songs in the last few years (I know, I know, I’m getting old). And Europa is anything but soft. They play an aggressive form of alternative rock music that never ever takes a breath. And they play it well.
The 6 tracks on their …read more

Jewish Community Center of San Francisco

Jewish Community Center of San Francisco

One of my favorite times of day is when I hear the mailman open up our screen door and bang the mailboxes as he fills them. I get lots of interesting stuff in my mail … CDs, letters with packages, business plan request, manuscript stuff … but today the exciting thing was my calendar of events for the JCCSF. And it occurred to me that a lot of people probably don’t know what a great place the JCCSF is for events.
I used to work at the Jewish Community Center back home in Tucson so I was familiar from there about …read more

San Fran Voice Round-Up

San Fran Voice Round-Up

If you go to the archives of this site, you’ll find that this is what San Fran Voice had to share with you in the month of August:
- 12 CD reviews for various genres of music including jazz, indie rock, RnB and singer-songwriter folk
- 9 interviews: four with local artists, four with local bands or musicians and one with a local fashion designer
- 8 recommendations of things to check out (which were primarily but not entirely live music events)
That seems to me to be a pretty good balance of what I want to have on the site, sharing information with …read more

CD Review: Crystal and the Wolves

CD Review: Crystal and the Wolves

When I was about eighteen, I quit my job on a whim and spent a couple of months unemployed and “studying life”. That time was both awful and wonderful; I was broke, I was confused about life and I still had a tendency towards teenage drama but I was spending my time in cafes, reading books, writing bad poetry and really developing who I thought that I wanted to be. What I remember about that time is that life was kind of a hodge podge of this good and bad, a hodge podge of a lot of things really.
I covered …read more

Recommended Radio Show Tonight

Recommended Radio Show Tonight

Bi-lingual singer-songwriter Tiffany Joy is a true joy to listen to in any language. She has a strong voice, lyrics filled with character and great instrumentation. She’s also got an awesome personality which shines through in the interview she did not that long ago with San Fran Voice.
Tiffany Joy just released her new album, and she’ll be showing off some of the new music tonight on XM Radio. The show happens at 7 pm PST and will run for an hour. Tiffany Joy is only one of the performers in that hour so you’ll get to hear her for a …read more

CD Review: Marlina Teich

CD Review: Marlina Teich

Jazz music usually sounds very old-timey to me. That’s not a complaint or a negative statement of any kind; I love that sound and the way that it takes you back to a time that perhaps you only know from the movies that you’ve seen. But I have to be in a certain kind of mood to be interested in that kind of music. What I found when listening to the five tracks on the EP sent to me by Marlina Teich was that I didn’t have to be in a particular music to hear her kind of jazz. I …read more

SF Music Speaks: An Interview with Miggs

SF Music Speaks: An Interview with Miggs

I actually became familiar with Miggs when I was asked to review the band’s sophomore CD for Sure Shot Magazine. After hearing the CD, I became interested in learning more about the band. And I got to do so through this San Fran Voice interview with Don Miggs in which we learn the history of the band, their favorite SF venues and a few of their secrets.
Q: What’s the story on how the band formed?
A: Miggs has had a few incarnations, for sure. We’ve been calling it a “collective” at this point!!! The latest lineup, the one I truly …read more

SF Music Speaks: An Interview with Kate Isenberg

Kate Isenberg is an amazing local singer-songwriter who has been working hard to carve out a career for herself in the creative arts. Hopefully you got a chance to check out my review of her recent CD release, The Time Comes on Humming Tracks. In this interview, Kate tells us about her work and gives us more insight into that CD.
Tell us about your work.
My work in the arts is multi-faceted, reflecting three major areas of interest: music, illustration, and writing. Currently, music is the pursuit I devote my after-work resources to, though that has shifted before and will likely …read more
