Reader Tip: Elaine Joyce at The Plush Room

Reader Tip: Elaine Joyce at The Plush Room

Most of the events that I post about on San Fran Voice are music or art events that I’m personally interested in. Sometimes this is just because they catch my eye and sound like something worth checking out. Often it’s because I know the people involved in them and am sure it’ll be a fun time. Today’s recommended event (which starts tonight and runs through Wednesday, October 24th) wouldn’t have caught my attention if it weren’t for a tip from a reader. The reader happens to be a Los Angeles resident who is going to be in the San Francisco …read more

There’s Creative And Then There’s Crazy

There’s Creative And Then There’s Crazy

I had another post in mind for this morning, a post sprung from a thought that formed while I was reading a book this morning by a San Francisco author. But as a I write this, a highly agitated man is screaming obscenities at tourists right outside my window and I’m having trouble focusing on what I’d originally planned to say.
What I’m thinking about instead is what a good friend of mine said last year on his first visit to San Francisco. We were riding the bus, going to or coming from some event, and I’d casually asked him if …read more

San Francisco Sampler CD Update

San Francisco Sampler CD Update

As most of you already know, I’m working out the logistics of possibly putting together a sampler CD of music from the city. I received a lot of really great ideas and assistance about the CD from those of you who know more about making music in this city (and in general) than what I know. I’ve compiled that information and will be working on a business and marketing plan to further develop the CD. (If you’re going to do creative things, you should do them right!)
Although plans will be in the works, further developments will be unlikely to be …read more

Poetry in North Beach

Poetry in North Beach

Last night was one of those nights when I felt like being out and about but didn’t actually feel like wandering too far from home. Luckily, it never takes too much time to get to a place in San Francisco where something was happening. In my case, I just needed to wander around the corner to the North Beach library where I found a melding of creative minds at a cozy little reading by three North Beach poets. These poets harkened back to the old days of the Beat Generation that filled the bars and cafes here … but of …read more

San Francisco’s Creative Energy

San Francisco’s Creative Energy

I first came to San Francisco on a whim and it took only moments to realize that this was the place that was my creative center. It wasn’t where I always lived in the past and may not be where I’ll always live in the future. But it is always going to be the place that can re-invigorate my soul when inspiration elsewhere is lacking.
I was reminded of this recently upon my return home from a multi-week vacation in my hometown. I had good times on that trip. Tucson has it’s own kind of creativity that is interesting and unique, …read more

Hayes Valley Design Festival

Hayes Valley Design Festival

As many of my regular readers already know, I spent the last few weeks back in my hometown. It’s always interesting going back home … for all of the reasons that going home as a grown-up means, of course … but also because it gives you such a refreshed perspective on your new home when you return. The first event that I went to after coming back to San Francisco was yesterday’s Capsule Design Festival in Hayes Valley. It was one of several events I’d considered for the weekend, including Lit Crawl and the Noe Valley Farmer’s Market and Festival. …read more

The San Fran Voice Update

The San Fran Voice Update

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what the purpose of this blog is and what I want to do with it. San Francisco is one of the most creative places that I know, not just in the arts that are available here but in the very way of life that we support. More than anywhere else that I have ever been in the United States, San Francisco just lets people be the way that they are. This means that there is a lot of room for creativity just in the way that we each choose to live our individual …read more

Recommended Event: Beats4Boobs TOMORROW

Recommended Event: Beats4Boobs TOMORROW

There’s a fundraiser event over at 111 Minna tomorrow night. I normally don’t recommend fundraiser events because they’re expensive and let’s face it, they’re often just a little on the dull side. But Beats4Boobs, which raises money for breast cancer awareness, is one of those events that hip and cool and filled with fun even though it’s about the fundraising. It’s got art and fashion, food and music and it’s only $20 to get in which isn’t bad for 7 hours of action (from 7 p.m. – 2 a.m.) And Minna’s a cool spot so you can check that out …read more

SF Music Speaks: An Interview with Warren Teagarden

SF Music Speaks: An Interview with Warren Teagarden

Warren Teagarden is an indie rock musician who pulls together an array of different influences to affect his sound. No matter which influence you hear on any given song, you can bet that he’s playing honest music straight from the heart. His EP was reviewed here on SFV last week and now you can get the full story about his work from his interview.
What can you tell us about your musical history? What made you strike out on your own after playing with a band here?
I started out as a bedroom guitarist, for many years I just played by myself …read more

Recommended Event: Mission Indie Mart this Sunday

Do you love supporting local artists? Does the idea of finding a great outfit from a local designer at an outdoor market in the Mission sound like the best idea for a weekend plan that you’ve heard in awhile? Can you even think of a reason that you wouldn’t want to check out this DIY event that happens every month?
It’s the Mission Indie Mart, an event that was started by local creative spirit Kelly Malone who sells vintage designs there. In addition to vintage, you can find design and craft. And you can also get your mouth around some organic …read more
