SF Music Speaks: An Interview with Philasonic

An interview with Philasonic needs no introduction because he’s able to tell it better than I can! Check out his MySpace for even more information.
What are the basics of your musical history?
I remember singing along to Elvis and Rolling Stones 45s when I was about 5 years old, on my Fisher Price record player. I began writing songs in the fifth grade, even though I couldn’t really play an instruments. In the 70’s and 80’s radio played a wide variety of music, from soul, funk, R&B, disco, synth pop, acid rock, light rock, progressive rock, new wave, second …read more

San Francisco YouTube of the Day: Alcatraz

San Francisco YouTube of the Day: Alcatraz

Regular readers of this site know that there hasn’t been a lot of activity here this week because I’ve been busy on a book deadline for my most recent book, Ghosts of Alcatraz. As a result, it seems fitting to include a YouTube video today that’s about Alcatraz. It’s a series of photos from a tour to the island, set to music that seems totally incongruent to the attitude of the incarceration island.

San Francisco Quote of the Day: on crime

San Francisco Quote of the Day: on crime

Today’s quote comes from an interview with archaeologist Allen Pastron who worked extensively in the Bay Area. The actual interview is about that work, but the quote gives an interesting look into crime and vigilantes in San Francisco in the nineteenth century. Gotta love the lawlessness of the Bay Area.
San Francisco was so lawless during the Gold Rush and the municipal authorities so corrupt and impotent, that at two different times, in 1851 and 1856, the local citizens formed Committees of Vigilance to deal with crime and violence. These were committees of citizens who acted as vigilantes to deport criminals …read more

Quick Note from SFV

Quick Note from SFV

I’m on a book deadline this month and that has got my full attention so San Fran Voice may not be up to its usual level of information-providing. Regular content should still be up on the site but if you go a couple of days without seeing some good stuff, rest assured that it’s a temporary issue. When you see the excerpts from the new book, Ghosts of Alcatraz, you’ll understand.
In the meantime, check out book #1, Ghosts of San Francisco, which not only tells you about the ghosts supposedly haunting the streets of this city but also has lots …read more
