San Francisco Live Music Venues: Bimbo’s 365

Venue: BIMBO’S 365
Address: 1025 Columbus Avenue @ Chestnut St.
Neighborhood: North Beach
Types of bands that play here:  Bigger but somewhat off-the-wall names (see below)
How often there’s live music: Weekly
Points given for:  Large space, big stage, great sound, interesting acts
Points taken away because: Usually pricey and with a drink minimum, shows often sell out early
Overall: Recommended by The Most Kissed Music Journalist as a place to go on special occasion dates; it’s a fabulous “once in awhile” place when bands you know and like are playing there but not a “let’s see what’s happening there this weekend ‘cuz we’re bored” types of …read more

You know when you go to the bar and you can’t take your eyes off that guy who absolutely can’t dance but is going at it anyway?  And you really give him a lot of credit for just getting in there and doing it with zero self-conscious because he’s really having fun?  Turn it into a group activity for a really unique, fun New Years celebration and you’ve got today’s YouTube pick

San Francisco YouTube Pick Of The Day

Okay, so the fact is that I don’t know why I found this video clip to be at all amusing and throughout the entire almost-five-minutes, I kept telling myself to quit watching it.  But I couldn’t.  It’s like taking bad reality tv and merging it with Spanish soap operas and then bringing it to San Francisco.  If you figure out why it’s funny, leave a comment and let me know.

This montage of clips taken from the Shine photobooth would probably be a lot more fun to watch if it had been set to music but it’s a quick minute and a half clip that has moments of amusement.  If you don’t know about this photobooth, it’s located in the Mission (at the bar, Shine); you go into it and take four pics and they get automatically uploaded to Flickr.  Super cool idea.

Cookie Mongoloid performs crazy metal (“Sesame Speed Metal”) in that creepy Cookie Monster voice at the Cyclecide Bicycle Rodeo Benefit which was held at San Francisco’s ACE Junkyard.  Really, watch it just for the voice.

It’s always fun to watch street performance in San Francisco and breakdancing is one of the types of on-the-street-entertainment that you see here most often.  Today’s SF-themed YouTube pick is footage of the Funky Fools.

San Francisco Live Music Venues: Hemlock Tavern

Address: 1131 Polk Street between Sutter and Post
Neighborhood: “Polk Gulch” according to the website, although everyone I know agrees that it’s “that neighborhood between Russian Hill and The Tenderloin”
Types of bands that play here:  Alternative … not in the sense of the music genre “alternative” but in the sense of “hm, familiar to something I know but a bit different”; example: an upcoming show by a faux French band and a weekly “Punk Rock Sideshow”.
How often there’s live music:  Almost every night of the year, baby!
Points given for:  Really interesting mixture of people in the crowd as well …read more
