Recommended Event: Brothers Lekas tomorrow

As you may remember from our interview with them, The Brothers Lekas are an acoustic folk rock duo that is also part of a jam band called In Rare Form. In our interview, we tried to get at the heart of what makes the duo different from the band. We got a little bit of insight – the acoustic work is more planned, the writing styles are different, and the band is more expansive in its genre-reaching. But the only way to really understand the difference is to see both bands play. And you can do that tomorrow night, since …read more

CD Review: Aoede

CD Review: Aoede

*This image is a painting titled “Gallery Reception Night”. It was done by Sandra Lo and is on the inside cover of the Aoede CD.
Last month, San Fran Voice was lucky enough to get an interview with Lisa Sniderman, the voice of Aoede. In that interview, Lisa told us that Aoede is a folk-laced pop-rock duo which takes its name from the muse of song in Greek mythology. After listening to the four tracks on their EP, Ear Candy, I have to say that the name is fitting. The music conjures up all of the fantasy and inspiration of a …read more

SF Art Speaks: An Interview with Angela Simione

*paintings by Angela Simione, see more on her art blog.
Angela Simione is a Bay Area painter whose work comes from the feminist perspective that the personal is political. She creates provocative pieces that make you think and cause you to debate. Despite the serious controversy that can be drummed up by some of her pieces, Angela has a fun, light-hearted approach to life. She loves the diversity of the city, she enjoys the work that she does and she’s excited to meet other creative folks in the city. In this interview with San Fran Voice, she …read more

Two Great Singers To Choose From Tomorrow

Two Great Singers To Choose From Tomorrow

There are two great singers both putting on performances tomorrow and I recommend that you check at least one of them out. If you can hop from place to place, even better. But, if not, find the neighborhood that you’re closest to (North Beach or Mission) and make your way to see either Tiffany Joy or Kate Isenberg.
Tiffany Joy is a beautiful bilingual singer who is going to be having her CD Release party tomorrow at The Purple Onion in North Beach. Doors open at eight. The music starts at nine and goes for two hours, after which the bar …read more

SF Jazz Speaks: An Interview with Marlina Teich

SF Jazz Speaks: An Interview with Marlina Teich

One of the greatest things about music in San Francisco is that there is a diversity of genres here. If you want to hear a particular kind of music, you can find a band or musician that plays it and a venue that showcases it. We’re lucky in that. One of those genres is jazz; and one of those musicians is Marlina Teich. Not only does she play jazz in venues across the city, but she’s also the founder of an organization called Jazzheimer’s which brings this music to Alzheimer’s patients in and around San Francisco’s Western Addition. CD Review: Micah Anderson

CD Review: Micah Anderson

Earthy. That’s the word that keeps coming to mind as I explore the music made by Micah Anderson. It has the rich texture of fertile soil. It has roots that stretch deep into the ground of musical influence. And it has the bright vividness of colors and smells and sensations that can only be found in nature. It is down-to-earth; earthy.
Micah Anderson is a San Jose musician who plays a version of acoustic rock that’s spiced up with a hint of blues, a dash of country and maybe even a little tiny pinch of gospel. His voice is deep and …read more

CD Review: Donnie Williams

When I was in middle school and early high school, I was drawn towards bands like Boys II Men. What can I say; I had a romantic bone inside of me that was aching to be picked. I daydreamed about growing up to enjoy candlelit dinners, rose petals strewn across large beds and passionate kisses. And I listened to the music by men who painted tales of that kind of romance. These days, I’m more inclined towards songs by female singer-songwriters with independent spirits and creative careers. But there’s a soft spot in my heart for the kind of music …read more

CD Review: Drew Thomas

CD Review: Drew Thomas

I love the CD that I got from Drew Thomas. I know, that’s not a very good description for a music review. But that’s the thing about love – words can’t ever do it justice. You can’t describe the way that a person gets inside of you and presses your heart with their own pulse so that yours beats faster than it ever has before. You can’t describe the way that the right person – or the right lyrics – can know you better than you know yourself. Because it doesn’t matter what metaphors you come up with or what …read more
