San Francisco Quote of the Day: architecture

San Francisco is a city with stunning architecture and simultaneously a city which celebrates nature. Less than 50 square miles in size and we allow for both the tall buildings of the Financial District and the expanse of Golden Gate Park.

In her piece “Under The Redwoods“, Mary C. McFadden writes about one piece of this duality:

Other than the bridges, the Transamerica Pyramid is the most distinctive feature in San Francisco’s skyline. It is our tallest building and the only one of its kind. A small oasis of redwood trees sits at its base. Surrounded by concrete, glass, and steel, half-acre Redwood Park, on the east side of the Transamerica Pyramid, was intended as a lunch spot for employees, a haven for office workers. The few dozen redwoods offer shade, the fountain provides positive ions, and the quiet is remarkable. It’s a place for coming down to earth from high finance.

McFadden’s piece goes on to describe some of the rich (and interesting, the piece is subtitled “The Park Beneath The Pyramid Has A Shady Past”) history of the area. Check it out for all of the details about this area.
