A Brief Look at The Girlfriend Experience
The Girlfriend Experience is an Oakland band that seems to hardly ever be in the Bay Area because they’re always heading out on tour. Well, that’s not quite true; they’re around the third Friday of every month to host Vaudeville a la Mode (indie performance – fun stuff) at The Uptown. But it is true that these guys tour a lot and they’re heading out again soon in support of their album When In Rome … Do As The Lions. So you should probably catch them before they go; they’re playing a free show tomorrow, June 7, here in the city at Alamo Square Park.
Here’s some basic stuff about them:
The Girlfriend Experience Website
The Girlfriend Experience MySpace page
A summary of their sound: “Shoe-gazey, no-wavey alt indie in various shades of black” with lyrics that are “not for minors”.
Who listens to The Girlfriend Experience: “Fans of solid, live rock music.”
SF landmark that The Girlfriend Experience would be if it was one: Either 16th and Market or Polk Street for the debauchery that can be found there.
Their current favorite SF venue: “Fat City, host to the band’s welcome home show from their SWxNW Summer Tour”
Other local bands they’ll tell you that they like: The Hundred Days, The Sore Thumbs, Machinegreen, The May Fire, Fastpass, and Charmless.
Where you can stalk them: In the East Bay, they’re usually at The Uptown or Ruby Room. In the city, they can be found at Hemlock or Annie’s.
Where you’ll find them a year from now: In a studio recording a follow-up to the current album.
