SF Bands Speak: An Interview with The Dystrict
The Dystrict is a Bay Area alternative rock band that embodies the diversity which makes this area unique. They’re a multi-ethnic group made up of members that come from all over the United States. Refusing to limit themselves to a single genre- they blend influences from hip hop, punk, funk, soul and reggae to create a sound that is surprisingly fresh, even for the unique scene that we hear here. But don’t let me tell you why you should like them; go check them out at a no-cover show at Grant and Green on May 24th. But first, get the scoop on their personal story (and their new album) from this exclusive interview:
How did the band form? Good ole’ Craigslist! Ed [guitarist] and Sayo [singer] auditioned for a band that Karl [drummer] and our old bass player started. We only found Fabian [bassist] about a year ago, so I guess you can say that we are a fairly new band.
What’s your favorite song to perform live and why? “Ride.” It’s this hard hitting, funk ridden, melodic rock thing that just makes you want to…um…yeah…Ride!
What’s the biggest thing that listeners should look forward to about the upcoming album? The new album is very diverse. Since we all come from various influences, listeners are definitely going to hear a nice blend of rock and soul and funk and hip hop and ska and punk…and on and on…
Describe the average The Dystrict fan. Unfortunately we don’t have an “average” fan. Our fans are everything but “average”.
Do you have a favorite SF venue? The Warfield, The Boom Boom Room, The Independent…The Warfield is like the place legends are made of and The Boom Boom Room has that chicken-grease-one a.m.-alt-afro-beat-jazz-blues-rock-style. The Independent is where we catch bands that are up and coming.
Which spots in the city can you be found in when you’re just out and about? Haight, Mission…Basically where decadence can be turned into beauty n’ vice versa, that’s where you’ll find us…
If the band was a San Francisco landmark, which one would it be and why? The Golden Gate Bridge because we only hope that our music continues to build bridges and break boundaries.
Where do you want to be a year from now? Five years? Touring. Still Touring (but with a hot crib to rest our heads in after we come home beat and worn out).
If there was anything that you could make sure your fans knew, what would it be? We love them and we’re their #1 fan!
