SF Art Speaks: An Interview With Magdalena Soul

Magdalena Soul is a San Francisco-based hip hop dancer and choreographer who expresses herself through the physical performance art of dance.  Putting her movements to music and then working with Avalon Studios to film the performances to create dance videos, she is able to explore her own artistic proclivities while also offering creative tributes to performers she appreciates including Santana and Marvin Gaye.  You can view some of these videos here.

If you get a chance to make it over to Sausalito this Wednesday, May 9th, you can check out her work since she’s going to be participating in this month’s Sausalito Art Walk.  The event is from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. on Caledonia Street just across the bridge.

Describe your work for us.

I dance freestyle with a combination of hip hop, ballet, tap and modern dance.  There are a lot of things that I can do with this; working on the dance videos is one aspect of my art.  I will be working on some more videos by the end of the year.

How does the city inspire or affect your art work?

San Francisco has so much color and flare and opportunity!  The art scene here is different, original and new.

Where can we see your work?

I am planning to perform in Marin County in collaboration with an artist for the Sausalito Art Walk.  Additional information on that event is available here.

How much networking do you do with other local artists?

I attend an artist group. I meet artists of different kinds on a regular basis when attending art events.

What types of art events do you enjoy?

I love performing art events like acting, dancing and visual artists.

What advice do you have for emerging artists?

Keep doing your art and never give up on your dream.

Magdalena knows what she’s talking about, or at least it would seem so given the fact that she’s performed all throughout the city at various events and locations.  Recently, she won the “best dancer” award for her Madonna tribute freestyle dance performance at Darkoom Theatre.  Interested individuals can contact Magdalena Soul via email at musicamaria@yahoo.com.
