What To Read In San Francisco

What To Read In San Francisco

Last month, I gave you the lowdown on what I read to get the inside scoop about what’s going on in San Francisco.  From my favorite SF blog sites to the books that I know have a San Francisco theme to them at some level, I gave you the 9-item list of what’s what.  But I’m looking back on what I’ve read since then and I’m finding that those items really were just a starting point (which I knew at the time, since I’m somewhat psychic and all), so I figure that it’s time to update the list.
Here are the …read more

San Francisco Live Music Venues: The Independent

San Francisco Live Music Venues: The Independent

Venue: THE INDEPENDENT
Address: 628 Divisadero Street (between Grove and Hayes)
Neighborhood: Alamo Square
Types of bands that play here:  Numerous genres, often national acts that you know by name
How often there’s live music: 5 – 6 x / week
Points given for:  Gets bigger acts than many SF venues, regularly hosts good music, maintains local feel while being an actual music venue
Points taken away because: It’s a real venue so you’re paying real concert prices, although they generally range from $10 – $20 / ticket so it’s not so bad
Overall: Not the place I’d go to just to stop in and see who …read more

Okay, so the fact is that I don’t know why I found this video clip to be at all amusing and throughout the entire almost-five-minutes, I kept telling myself to quit watching it.  But I couldn’t.  It’s like taking bad reality tv and merging it with Spanish soap operas and then bringing it to San Francisco.  If you figure out why it’s funny, leave a comment and let me know.

Lessons in Love from the Heart of San Francisco

Lessons in Love from the Heart of San Francisco

Every area of life has its lessons, and if you look closely enough, you’ll see that those lessons can be applied to other parts of your life as well.  Being able to take what you learn and make use of it throughout your life is what makes you a well-rounded person who is able to cope with all of life’s different experiences.  One of the main areas in which many people feel at a loss is in the area of interpersonal relationships (um, yeah, dating).  Smart people who are confident and successful in other areas of life find themselves bumbling …read more

Anyone who spends time out and about in San Francisco eventually runs into the 12 Galaxies guy walking around with his sign.  Most people don’t bother trying to figure out what his deal is.  The guy filming this started to get some info from the guy and then ended up getting distracted by an amusing drunk girl on the street.

Did you know that the fortune cookie was a food that was invented here in San Francisco?  The Bay Area happens to be the birthplace of a number of different foods including the Popsicle, Crab Louis salad, Cioppino stew and the Martini.  This clip that tells you the history of the fortune cookie is set at the Japanese Tea Garden, a beautiful retreat within Golden Gate Park.

San Francisco Neighborhoods: Fisherman’s Wharf

San Francisco Neighborhoods: Fisherman’s Wharf

There is going to be some debate among people browsing through the San Fran Voice information about San Francisco neighborhoods as to whether or not Fisherman’s Wharf can really be called a “neighborhood”.  It’s a place with geographic boundaries for sure, but it’s more of a tourist attraction than a neighborhood, right?  In a sense, yes, but in terms of being a part of the city which is unique in and of itself to the area within which it is confined, I think that Fisherman’s Wharf is very much its own neighborhood.
Fisherman’s Wharf itself is the section of the city …read more

This montage of clips taken from the Shine photobooth would probably be a lot more fun to watch if it had been set to music but it’s a quick minute and a half clip that has moments of amusement.  If you don’t know about this photobooth, it’s located in the Mission (at the bar, Shine); you go into it and take four pics and they get automatically uploaded to Flickr.  Super cool idea.
