Hyphy: The Beverage

Most of the world has started to get familiar with the Bay Area music movement, hyphy.  It’s been around for a few years now (since the ‘90s in terms of the really underground scene and since the turn of the new century for those less in-the-know) and it’s got some sub-genres spinning off of it.  If you ask the average high school kid what it means to “go dumb”, they’ll know that you’re talking about the world of hyphy and they’ll also know that you don’t know nothing about it if you still have to ask that.

But this post isn’t about hyphy, the cultural movement; it’s about Hyphy, the drink.  It’s just like San Francisco area peeps to be ahead of the game in entrepreneurial pursuits and that’s what happened to create this beverage – the guys who thought of it put together the trend of energy drinks and the trend of hyphy music and made a drink that captured the essence of both of them.

You can find Hyphy by going to your local convenience store and heading towards the energy drinks.  Skip the Rock Star; what you’re looking for is the Red Bull sized silver can that’s decorated in bright green and purple lettering reflecting that this drink merges Apple and Grape flavors to create a carbonated “grapple” taste.  To be honest, it doesn’t taste like either flavor to me, but it does taste like your average energy drink.  It uses ginseng and taurine to give you energy and is advertised as being for people “who lead exciting lives”.

You can head to the website page that’s advertised on the bottled-in-Oakland drinks.  What you won’t find there is a whole lot of information since it’s “coming soon in August 2006”.  But what you will hear is a hyphy juice song that references “Da Yay Area”, hyphy clothing culture and the liquors that go good for adults drinking Hyphy.  For those people who have somehow managed to still not understand hyphy, the movement, the song is a good intro.  After that, settle in with your Hyphy and check out the info on the following links:

  • Urban Dictionary has another definition which is more in-the-know
  • YouTube has videos you can sort through here
