Vote for SF bands at Deli Magazine
March is halfway over; have you voted for your favorite SF band out of the eight which were nominated over at Deli Magazine for their March Artist of the Month Award? If not, take a look at the rundown on the nominated bands and then head over to the site to cast your vote.
BAND NAME: Abi Yoyos; GENRE ACCORDING TO MYSPACE: “Club/Dub/Club”; PLAYING LIVE AT: No schedule noted but there’s live YouTube footage on the MySpace page; I WOULD GIVE POINTS FOR: Major points for the band name which references one of the first stories I remember being told by my storytelling father. Additional points for creative blending of different genres of music and general originality.
BAND NAME: Bear on Bear; GENRE ACCORDING TO MYSPACE: “Zouk/French Pop/Rock” ; PLAYING LIVE AT: El Rio on March 21st; I WOULD GIVE POINTS FOR: Strangely warm vocals complimented by the instruments.
BAND NAME: Death Sentence: Panda!; GENRE ACCORDING TO MYSPACE: genreless; PLAYING LIVE AT: ooh, a European tour; I WOULD GIVE POINTS FOR: Well, they’re certainly interesting …
BAND NAME: Giraffes? Giraffes!; GENRE ACCORDING TO MYSPACE: “Experimental/Indie/Psychedelic”; PLAYING LIVE AT: The Blue Lagoon in Santa Cruz on March 25th; I WOULD GIVE POINTS FOR: Their pics absolutely amused me. And for a duo doing just instrumentals, they kept my attention very well even though I’m totally a vocals kind of gal.
BAND NAME: Kings & Queens ; GENRE ACCORDING TO MYSPACE: “Psychedelic/Soul/Experimental”; PLAYING LIVE AT: Miner’s Foundry in Nevada City on April 7th; I WOULD GIVE POINTS FOR: Ability to blend the talents of so many different band members to create a single unified sound.
BAND NAME: The Morning Benders; GENRE ACCORDING TO MYSPACE: “Rock/Indie/Pop”; PLAYING LIVE AT: The Arena Theatre in Point Arena on March 24th; I WOULD GIVE POINTS FOR: The fact that they have Beatles influence and modern sound without sounding like a bad modern ripoff of the band – listen to Damnit Anna and you’ll see.
BAND NAME: The Music Lovers; GENRE ACCORDING TO MYSPACE: ooh, no genre listed, I love it; PLAYING LIVE AT: The Metro in Oakland on 3/22 and Hemlock in SF on 3/30; I WOULD GIVE POINTS FOR: Professional, polished sound … slight English flavor on super rich vocals, kind of like thick cream on strong coffee.
BAND NAME: Poor Bailey; GENRE ACCORDING TO MYSPACE: “Indie/Alternative/Folk Rock”; PLAYING LIVE AT: Blake’s on Telegraph in Berkeley on March 31st; I WOULD GIVE POINTS FOR: Super fun band that makes me want to bounce along.
Think you know who I voted for? Tell me via comments because I’m curious to know. I’ll let you know if they win.

[...] In case you were wondering what the results of Deli Magazine’s SF “Artist of the Month” poll were for March … the results are in and the Bay Area band that won the hearts of the Deli’s voters was Bear on Bear. Technically, these guys aren’t a San Francisco band because they’re from Santa Cruz, but we can go ahead and claim them in terms of bands making music in the Bay Area that San Franciscans apparently want to hear. They don’t play in the city again until the end of May, but you can catch them online or over in Santa Cruz. [...]
