NOTES FROM NOISE POP:
The date: 2/28/07
The venue: Great American Music Hall
The bands: The New Trust, Love of Diagrams, The Bent Moustache, Sebadoh
Noise Pop Notes: The Great American Music Hall is a terrific venue which has double-level standing room to create the sense of an intimate music location with the space for a decent-sized crowd. Noise Pop 2007 is just getting started and there were several shows on last night’s list that looked promising but I was ultimately happy with the choice I made to see this particular show.
The New Trust opened things up, and although they didn’t quite have the stage presence to really draw in the still-small crowd, they did have an awesome female drummer who percussion fans should keep their ears on. They were followed by Love of Diagrams, a Melbourne band whose own female drummer held her own with excellent support from the dual vocals, guitar and bass of the other two members. Their pop version of indie rock offered a lighter touch of sound which was followed by the much harder edge of Netherlands indie/dub/shoegaze band The Bent Moustache. This band layered levels of music on top of one another to create a texture of sound in the space making up the Great American Music Hall.
The headlining band was Sebadoh, the late-nineties lo-fi music pioneers who have recently reunited for a tour. They may be older and wiser than they were when they were initially popular in the underground music culture but the age hasn’t affected their sound. They absolutely rocked out the stage for the length of their high-energy set. Seeing them was a terrific way to kick off Noise Pop 2007.
